I will be conducting a Pre-Experimental study design with a single-group Pre/Post test. I will conduct a case study with two students at a Title 1 school, and focus on a using academic language alongside a piece of text. This purposive sample will be lower SES, have special needs, and are ELL (EI to Intermediate CELDT level). The quantitative data from the pre/post test will provide information about student’s reading achievement. The qualitative data will help to explain their learning experience during the focused instruction through a focus group recorded interview. I will have a PRE-test which will consist of a retell of that piece of text, and then the POST test will be a second retell using that same piece of text. I will be using a rubric which will incorporate the ELD and Speaking/Listening grade-level standards. As the teacher researcher I will perform all the collection and analysis of the data, no remuneration will be provided. All student data will be held confidential. Step by Step Plan:
Identify 2 Students for Case Study. Second grade student, likely one girl and one boy, Early Intermediate/Intermediate CELDT students at Title 1 school.
Data Profile for Case Study (DIBELS, CELDT, iRead Data, initial RI (Dec), and any Formative Assessments.
Retell Text to use with students for Pre/Post (A to Z Reading) and Print 2 student copies. Likely Text:Changes Level J (see below)
Technology Tool Note: I will not be using any tech tools for my first piece of research. I will share the below reader on an ipad for students to page through. I would like to see how easy that is vs. a paper text.
